About the Atmosphere

Earth's Atmosphere Layer

The atmosphere (above) is a blanket of protective gases around the Earth providing insulation against otherwise extreme alternations in temperature. The gravitational pull of the Earth increases the density nearer the Earth's surface so that 5/6ths of the atmospheric mass is in the first 15 kms. It is a very thin layer in comparison with the Earth's diameter of 12 680 kms.
